Schools across the Clarkston Community Schools district were briefly placed under a shelter-in-place order Wednesday morning after the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office notified administrators that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were searching for two people in the area. The district said the precaution was put in place as deputies and unmarked law enforcement vehicles were seen along Sashabaw Road near Pine Knob, where ICE requested assistance in locating the individuals.
According to the district, the activity was not inside any school building, however the early notification from the sheriff’s office prompted administrators to keep students and staff indoors with controlled access to all facilities. Classes continued on schedule and recess was moved inside while the order remained in place. An email and text message sent to parents outlined that ICE was actively searching for two individuals and that the sheriff’s office was helping track them down.
Law enforcement sources later confirmed that the individuals being sought had escaped custody, which prompted the larger response. Chopper video from local stations showed several sheriff’s deputies and unmarked federal vehicles near the Pine Knob Music Theatre grounds. Those vehicles left the area shortly before the district received the “all clear” around 11 a.m.
The school district lifted the shelter-in-place late Wednesday morning once deputies confirmed it was safe to resume normal operations. As of now, ICE has not released additional details regarding the individuals they were searching for or what led to the escape.
