BREAKING: Michigan has fired head coach Sherrone Moore for cause after an internal investigation found credible evidence he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Athletic Director Warde Manuel confirmed the findings Monday and named Biff Poggi interim head coach.
Michigan’s decision ends Moore’s tenure just two seasons after he replaced Jim Harbaugh in 2024 and posted a 16–8 record as the program’s full-time leader.
Moore originally joined the Wolverines in 2018 as tight ends coach before moving to co-offensive coordinator in 2021 and eventually becoming the program’s play-caller. He served as acting head coach during Harbaugh’s suspension amid the Big Ten sign-stealing investigation, leading Michigan to a 3–0 stretch.
When Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers, Moore was elevated to head coach. He went 8–5 in his first season, including victories over Ohio State and Alabama. In 2025, Michigan finished 9–3 and 6–2 in Big Ten play behind freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood — the No. 1 overall recruit who won the starting job as a true freshman.
Moore, however, missed two games in 2025 after a suspension tied to the sign-stealing scandal and later received a two-year show-cause penalty. Poggi, serving as acting head coach during Moore’s absences, led Michigan to wins over Central Michigan and Nebraska.
Michigan entered the regular-season finale on a five-game winning streak before falling 27–9 to Ohio State in Ann Arbor, the most-watched college football game of the 2025 season and one that eliminated Michigan from Big Ten Championship contention.
Before his Michigan rise, Moore played offensive line at Oklahoma and began coaching at Louisville in 2009. He later coached at Central Michigan, adding assistant head coach responsibilities in 2017, before joining Michigan’s staff in 2018.
