SHOOTING AT SENIOR APARTMENT COMPLEX OVER BBQ INJURES 3 RESIDENTS – 4 IN TOTAL INCLUDING SUSPECT

A noise issue with loud music at a backyard barbecue escalated into gunfire Monday night at the Sheridan Place senior living apartments on Detroit’s east side, leaving four people hospitalized.

Detroit police say the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. at the complex in the 7500 block of East Jefferson Avenue. According to investigators, a male resident became upset over music and conversation from three neighbors grilling outside. He allegedly warned them to quiet down or he would “take care of them.”

Minutes later, police say, the man returned and opened fire, striking all three. One of the injured victims tackled the gunman, causing him to drop his weapon. A woman in her 60s picked up the suspect’s firearm and shot him in self-defense, ending his rampage.

All four involved, three victims and the suspect are in their 60s and 70s. They were taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

“This is a shooting so ridiculous in nature that you can’t even explain it,” said Detroit Assistant Chief Arnold Williams. “You don’t have to resort to a gun because somebody is playing loud music. It is just irrational. You are in your 70s, this should not be what’s going on.”
