Stolen Dodge Durango Chase Ends With 2 Arrests After Air Unit Tracks Suspects Through Detroit Neighborhood

A late-night pursuit that began in Garden City ended in a dramatic takedown on Detroit’s west side after a stolen Dodge Durango was abandoned in the middle of a busy intersection and its two occupants tried to run.

According to Michigan State Police, the incident started around 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 24 when Garden City police attempted to stop a silver Dodge Durango that had nearly struck a patrol vehicle. The SUV took off, and although Garden City officers were forced to terminate the chase, MSP Trooper 2 and an air unit kept eyes on the vehicle from above. The Durango was soon ditched at Grand River Avenue and the Southfield Service Drive, where both suspects bailed out and ran into a nearby neighborhood.

Troopers quickly locked down the area. The 23-year-old passenger from Ecorse was captured first. The 22-year-old driver from Detroit was found moments later hiding under a tractor-trailer in a storage lot south of Grand River near Longacre Street. Both men were taken into custody and lodged at the Detroit Detention Center.

State police say the arrests prevented two repeat offenders from continuing a dangerous crime spree. Investigators later confirmed the Durango had just been stolen, and both suspects were already deep in the system.

The passenger was wanted on multiple felony bench warrants out of Oakland County, including:

  • Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property
  • Fleeing and Eluding 3rd Degree
  • Assaulting, Resisting, or Obstructing Police
  • An additional felony warrant out of Oak Park

The driver was already on probation for:

  • Possession of a Stolen Vehicle
  • Fleeing and Eluding 3rd Degree
  • Damage to Police Property
  • Resisting and Obstructing Police

“Great work by all to get these suspects out of our neighborhood,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw, praising the coordinated effort between ground units and the MSP air crew that kept the suspects in sight until troopers could close in.

The case is now being reviewed for additional charges related to the stolen vehicle and the pursuit.
