A 17-year-old male was shot in the parking lot during a high school football playoff game Friday night, according to Harper Woods police.
The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m., just minutes before the game ended between Harper Woods High School and Chandler Park Academy. A large fight broke out before shots rang out, police said.
Authorities say the incident unfolded despite a strong law enforcement presence at the game including Harper Woods police, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and Michigan State Police.
The 17-year-old victim, a Warren resident, was shot in the lower torso. His injuries are not life-threatening. He was treated at the scene by the Harper Woods Fire Department before being taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
The game was called with less than a minute to go. Harper Woods beat Chandler Park 47–6.
As of Friday night, no suspect was in custody. Police have not released any suspect information.
