Three Detroit Men Charged in Widespread Counterfeit Cash Operation Spanning Southeast Michigan

Investigation began in Canton Township and expanded across Southeast Michigan with help from local police and the U.S. Secret Service

An investigation into a surge of counterfeit $100 bills being passed at businesses in Canton Township has led to the arrest and charging of three Detroit men accused of operating a counterfeit currency operation out of a city home.

Canton Township police said the investigation began in November 2025 after officers noticed an unusual increase in fake $100 bills circulating at local businesses. Around the same time, police departments in multiple neighboring communities reported similar incidents, indicating the problem was not isolated to one jurisdiction.

As the scope of the counterfeit activity became clearer, Canton police partnered with Plymouth Township Police, Northville Township Police, and the U.S. Secret Service to track the source of the fake currency. Investigators ultimately identified a home in the 17000 block of Salem in Detroit that they say was being used to manufacture the counterfeit bills.

According to police, the counterfeit currency was passed at nearly 50 businesses across eight counties in Southeast Michigan, impacting both large retailers and small, locally owned businesses. Authorities said the volume and geographic spread of the fake bills suggested a coordinated and ongoing operation.

Last week, investigators executed a search warrant at the Detroit home. Inside, police say they discovered printers, chemicals, ink, and specialized tools commonly used in the production of counterfeit currency. Several firearms were also recovered during the search, some of which were later confirmed to be stolen.

Three men were arrested during the raid: 26-year-old Darrion Daniels, 24-year-old Darrien Daniels, and 25-year-old Renard Scales, all of Detroit.

Darrion Daniels is charged with counterfeiting coins or notes, possession of counterfeiting tools, and four counts of felony firearm offenses. Darrien Daniels is charged with counterfeiting coins or notes, possession of counterfeiting tools, and two counts of felony firearm offenses. Scales is charged with counterfeiting coins or notes and possession of counterfeiting tools.

All three suspects were granted $10,000 personal recognizance bonds and are scheduled to return to court on December 30.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing and additional charges are possible as authorities continue reviewing evidence seized during the search and tracing the full extent of the counterfeit operation.
