Troy, MI – Police in Troy are warning residents about a tax-related scam after a local resident was duped by someone posing as a tax assistance representative.
According to the Troy Police Department, the victim was completing their taxes online when they later received a phone call from an individual claiming they could provide additional help. The caller convinced the resident to grant remote access to their computer and then sold them so-called “tax software,” taking payment by credit card over the phone.
When the resident contacted the legitimate tax preparation company directly, they were told the company does not sell software in that manner and had no record of the call.
Police say this is a reminder that scammers are becoming more aggressive during tax season, targeting people who are already in the middle of filing.
Nobody should ever give remote access to their computer to an unsolicited caller. Period.
Legitimate tax preparation companies do not cold call customers and ask for remote access or credit card information over the phone.

• Victim files taxes online
• Receives unexpected call from someone claiming to represent a tax service
• Caller requests remote access to “fix” or “complete” the return
• Victim provides access and payment information
• Funds are charged and no legitimate service is provided
How To Protect Yourself
• Never allow unsolicited callers remote access to your computer
• Never provide credit card or sensitive personal information over the phone
• Always contact companies directly using the official website or number you look up yourself
• If in doubt, hang up
If you believe you were targeted, contact your financial institution immediately to dispute charges and monitor for fraud. You should also file a police report.
