Trump Threatens Tariffs on European Countries Over Greenland, Citing Global Security Concerns

President Donald J. Trump issued a sweeping statement outlining potential tariffs on multiple European countries, linking the proposed economic measures to national security concerns involving Greenland.

In the statement, Trump argued that Denmark and several European Union nations have benefited for decades from U.S. economic and military support without adequate compensation. He claimed the current geopolitical environment has made Greenland a critical strategic asset, citing interest from China and Russia.

Trump asserted that Denmark is unable to adequately defend Greenland on its own, describing its current security presence as minimal. He said only the United States has the capability to secure the territory in a way that protects both American interests and global stability.

According to Trump, recent visits to Greenland by officials from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland represent a dangerous escalation. He described the situation as a serious threat to global safety, security, and long-term stability.

Proposed Tariffs and Timeline

Trump announced that beginning February 1, 2026, the United States would impose a 10% tariff on all goods imported from the listed countries. He stated that the tariff would increase to 25% on June 1, 2026, if no agreement is reached.

The tariffs, according to Trump, would remain in effect until a deal is completed for what he described as the “complete and total purchase of Greenland.”

Longstanding U.S. Interest in Greenland

Trump claimed the United States has sought to acquire Greenland for more than 150 years, with multiple presidents pursuing the idea. He said Denmark has historically refused such efforts, but argued that current global conditions have made acquisition more urgent than ever.

He referenced modern defense systems, including what he called the “Golden Dome,” stating that hundreds of billions of dollars are being invested in advanced offensive and defensive security programs. Trump said Greenland’s geography is essential for these systems to function at maximum efficiency due to spatial and strategic requirements.

Call for Negotiation

Despite the strong language, Trump said the United States remains open to negotiations with Denmark and the other countries named in the statement. He emphasized that the U.S. has provided decades of military protection and security support to its allies and suggested those contributions should now be recognized.

Trump concluded by framing the issue as one of global peace and security, stating that immediate action is necessary to prevent what he described as an unsustainable and dangerous international situation.
