SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Two men were killed following a shootout inside a Southfield apartment on Christmas night, stemming from an earlier domestic assault that police say was never reported.
The shooting happened just after 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 25 at Riverstone Apartments on Shiawassee Road.
According to Southfield Police Department, a 30-year-old Detroit man allegedly assaulted his 23-year-old girlfriend earlier in the day before leaving the apartment.
While he was gone, the woman invited a friend over, who arrived with a 20-year-old man from Madison Heights.
Police say the 30-year-old boyfriend later returned, forced his way into the apartment, and retrieved a firearm. The visiting acquaintance also produced a gun, and the two men exchanged gunfire inside the apartment.
Both men were struck by the exchange of gunfire. The 20-year-old man left with the acquaintance who brought him to the apartment and went to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The 30-year-old Detroit man who barged into the apartment was transported to the hospital via ambulance where he died.
The woman suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound to the hand and is expected to recover.
Authorities confirmed a 3-year-old child was inside the apartment during the shooting. The child was not physically injured and has since been released to a family member.
The investigation remains ongoing.
