Up to 50 Years in Prison: Corewell Hospital Shooting Suspect Sentenced After Parking Garage Attack

Troy, MI – A 22-year-old man who opened fire on his co-worker inside a hospital parking garage, triggering an active shooter alert and lockdown, has been sentenced to decades behind bars.

Robert Paljusevic was sentenced Tuesday to 11.25 to 50 years in prison for assault with intent to murder. He also received two years for felony firearm and two years for carrying a concealed weapon. The assault sentence and felony firearm sentence will be served consecutively, meaning Paljusevic will serve more than 13 years before becoming eligible for release, with a maximum possible sentence of 50 years.

The shooting happened on the morning of March 20, 2025, at Corewell Beaumont Hospital in Troy. Authorities say Paljusevic, who worked at the hospital, fired multiple shots at another employee in the parking garage, striking the victim twice before fleeing the scene.

The incident immediately sparked chaos, prompting a hospital lockdown and an active shooter alert that rippled through the surrounding community. Nearby schools were also placed on alert as police launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Paljusevic was later found and arrested at his home.

Investigators say the shooting was driven by a personal grievance. The victim had recently lost his father and held a private funeral service that Paljusevic was not invited to attend. That decision reportedly angered him.

According to testimony, Paljusevic warned the victim ahead of time, telling him not to be surprised if he saw him in public and something happened. The two men were not strangers, but co-workers who had developed a friendship.

The victim, a 25-year-old man, described Paljusevic as “Jekyll and Hyde,” saying he could be easy-going at times but quick to overreact. The victim’s mother also told investigators that Paljusevic appeared possessive of her son.

“Robert Paljusevic tried to kill his friend over a perceived slight,” said Prosecutor Karen McDonald. “The incident also sent the hospital into lockdown, put local schools on alert, and terrified an entire community. This sentence provides his victim with justice and makes clear that gun violence leads to serious consequences.”

Paljusevic ultimately pleaded no contest to the charges in February, bringing the case to a close with Tuesday’s sentencing.
