ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Michigan State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon in Allen Park following a response to a report of a suicidal subject armed with a knife.

According to the Allen Park Police Department, officers were dispatched around 3:20 p.m. to the area of Southfield Road near Roger Avenue for a report of a man threatening to harm himself. Responding officers were advised the subject was armed with a box-cutter-style knife and had placed it against his throat.

The Lincoln Park Police Department was requested to assist. Officers initially encountered the subject near the 7 Brew Coffee drive-thru exit, where police said he continued to pose a threat to himself and others. Officers deployed a Taser, but it had no effect.
Police said the subject then walked toward the entrance of an Arby’s restaurant while still holding the knife. Officers again attempted to use less-lethal force, firing a less-lethal shotgun round, which also failed to stop the subject.
The individual then entered active traffic lanes on Southfield Road, creating a danger to passing motorists. Despite repeated loud verbal commands to drop the knife, police said the subject ignored officers and began advancing toward them in an aggressive manner.
An officer then fired his duty weapon, striking the subject in the arm. The subject was taken into custody, and the Allen Park Fire Department was requested to the scene. Police said the injuries were not life-threatening.
The subject, identified as a 36-year-old man from Lincoln Park, was transported to Corewell Health in Dearborn for treatment. Authorities said neither the subject’s name nor the name of the officer involved will be released.
The Michigan State Police is actively investigating the incident, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
