Warren Man Charged in Overdose Death Linked to Carfentanil

Mount Clemens, MI — A Warren man is facing a life felony after prosecutors say he supplied narcotics that led to a fatal overdose in Clinton Township.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that 50-year-old Aron Edwards Jr., of Warren, was arraigned on charges stemming from a September 2025 overdose death.

According to authorities, Clinton Township Police responded on September 2, 2025, to a residence on Williamson Street for a reported drug overdose. Officers found two people unconscious and suffering from apparent overdoses. One individual, a woman, was successfully resuscitated. The second individual, identified as 54-year-old Roger Benthal, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later connected Edwards to the narcotics involved in the incident. Toxicology testing determined that Benthal had Carfentanil in his bloodstream, a powerful synthetic opioid often associated with fatal overdoses.

Edwards was arraigned on Friday, January 16, 2026, before Magistrate Ryan Zemke in the 41B District Court in Clinton Township on one count of Delivery of a Controlled Substance Causing Death. The charge is a felony punishable by life in prison or any term of years. Prosecutors stated this is the maximum charge available under Michigan law based on the evidence presented to date.

Magistrate Zemke set bond at $500,000 cash or surety. If released, Edwards must wear a GPS tether. A Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Sebastian Lucido in the 41B District Court.

“Many people do not realize the serious and often fatal risks they take when using drugs obtained off the streets. Lives can be lost in an instant. Drugs will not be tolerated in Macomb County, and my office will continue working aggressively to protect the safety and well-being of our residents,” Prosecutor Lucido said.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
