WASTE. FRAUD. ABUSE. MICHIGAN WOMAN ALLEGEDLY SCREWS STATE OUT OF $20K IN FOOD STAMPS

Democrats hate these three words I’m about to type: WASTE. FRAUD. ABUSE. They especially hate it when it’s uncovered in a program that is widely known to be full of scams and outright theft.

That’s the case with a Michigan woman who has allegedly scammed the State of Michigan out of more than $20K in food stamp, or SNAP, benefits, and she’s staring down a four-year felony charge because of it.

Here’s the lowdown: A 61-year-old woman from Bay City, by the name of Sherry S. Bodhaine, is accused of improperly collecting exactly $21,337 in benefits by lying about her household income. You see, Sherry “forgot” to disclose that, as part of her household, her adult son was working for Halliburton, which means he was bringing home some coin that should have been reported to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services when she filed her claim back on September 15, 2021. In fact, she falsely stated he had a grand income of $0. Whoops.

The MDHHS re-interviewed Bodhaine on September 29, 2021, and she reiterated her son had no income. Double whoops going on here.

Between February 2022 and February 2024, Bodhaine repeatedly completed renewal forms and was re-interviewed by MDHHS staff, and for the third time, guess what, failed to report her son’s income. We know what they say about the third time. Quite charming indeed.

The Michigan Office of Inspector General (OIG) staff determined Bodhaine’s son was employed by Halliburton from at least January 2022 through November 2024, when they took a deep dive into her case.

In early 2025, the OIG noticed Bodhaine’s gross income for 2022 did not match what the State had on record. They determined Bodhaine received $21,529 in food benefits between March 2022 and October 2024, when she should have only received $192. This leaves an alleged fraud amount of $21,337.

The State attempted to set up a meeting with Bodhaine in May, but she failed to show up for the interview or call OIG to reschedule. The OIG then forwarded their report to the Bay City Prosecutor’s Office, which filed charges against Bodhaine on July 31.

On August 8, she was arraigned on two counts of welfare fraud of $500 or more. The charge is a four-year felony, and/or repayment of the allegedly overpaid benefit amount. She could also face long-term disqualification from assistance programs.
