Chelsea, MI — Chelsea police are attempting to identify and speak with a woman after what appears to be a human skull was discovered inside a donation at a local Goodwill store last month.

According to the Chelsea Police Department, officers were called to the Goodwill location at approximately 1:54 p.m. on January 26, 2026, after store employees reported a suspicious item found inside a donation drop-off. Staff told police the item was wrapped inside a shirt and appeared to be a human skull.
An officer took possession of the item at the scene. Authorities say the skull did not show signs of damage, trauma, or unnatural holes, raising the possibility that it may be an older or medically preserved specimen rather than evidence of a recent crime.
Chelsea police consulted with the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the skull was turned over for further forensic evaluation to determine its origin and whether it is connected to any criminal activity or missing-person case.
Police emphasized that they are not accusing the woman of a crime but want to speak with her to confirm whether the donation was made intentionally or by mistake.
The woman was captured on surveillance video at the time of the donation, and police have released images in hopes that someone will recognize her.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer T. Gilbreath of the Chelsea Police Department at 734-475-9122, extension 107, or by email at tGilbreath@chelseapd.org
